Dear Parents,

Happy Thursday!! Well, illness has struct the whole building. Many influenza A cases. The scary thing is it comes with high fevers. Please, please keep your child at home if they are feeling poorly. I guess we can be thankful it is getting over with before Christmas! This week has been a big one for us. The Christmas Program last night, it was awesome! Then today was our Mass. Today is a Holy Day of Obligation for Catholics meaning they have to attend a mass so ours was pretty packed. That makes it nerve-wracking for students and teacher! We made it. We are glad our work is done They did an excellent job at Mass also.

Language Arts

This week we read a story that I feel can be scary. It is called the Earth Dragon Awakes! It is about the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906. This is historical fiction so it is about a real event but the characters are fictional. The story is about Ah and Chin Sing living in a tenement in Chinatown and the earthquake hits. Their tenement collapses and they are buried alive. They are saved but it is pretty intense. The vocabulary strategy this week was on the synonyms which I pointed out they do every week on their packet. In grammar we were learning about possessive nouns. They discussed singular possessive and plural possessive. Tomorrow will be a normal Friday with a spelling post test and the end of the week test.

Math

They have been working on taking their topic 3 test this week. With all the sickness it will take some recesses and maybe after school time to get these all finished up. We will begin Topic 4 next week, which begins our journey learning double digit-multiplication. We will learn the same three strategies we did form this chapter: Area Model, Partial Product, and the standard algorithm. the book does not have me teaching the standard algorithm but I always have in the past and Ms. Surma and I have decided it is best if I do it in 4th grade because she needs to focus on Division. Keep working on those flash cards.

Social Studies

We took a map test today. I have to say I was a bit disappointed. Many of them acted shocked and also said I can't remember the states. It was in their assignment book and I reminded them all week about this test coming They will also be taking a test over Chapter 5 tomorrow. We finished up the study guide today. I sure hope they study for this one. Next week we will begin a new region of the United States. We start talking about the Southeast. It will be great to move into a new region.

Adopt-a-Soldier

Remember our items for the Soldier are all due on Monday, December 12th.

Holiday Dress-Up Days

Last week I sent home a sheet about dress-up days for Christmas. They start next week on the 15th. I can't wait to see everyone and what they wear. I love this Holiday.

Tomorrow is NOT a spirit day! I hope everyone has a great weekend. I may be spending Saturday at a wrestling tournament watching my best friends' son possible make his 100 career win. So exciting! If not I may do some shopping. I am behind on my shopping this year. Usually I am better but I am failing this year. I need to step up my game.

God Bless,

Mrs. Sickels
