Dear Parents,
Happy Thursday! I am off this week! This is the 2nd time I have forgotten about it being Thursday! We survived Catholic Schools Week! It was a fun week with lots of different activities. I always enjoy it! The next thing we are working on is the Silent auction item for the St. Malachy Auction. The Auction is March 4th. I finally had a couple moms reply to help me with a project. We are meeting yet this week to decide what we would like to do with the class. I will let you know about donations next week. Please watch your email for information.
Language Arts
This week we are reading a story called The Right Dog for the Job. It is about the process dog go through to become a service dog. Last year at Thanksgiving time my sister-in-law visited with her dog Ilani. She is a service dog puppy trainer. She gets them for a year and meets once a week with other trainers. She has a new puppy this year named Gia. The kids learned a little from the story. If they are tryng to train their dogs at home this is why. In grammar they worked on adverbs and the vocab strategy this week was about suffixes: -ion, -ation, and -ition. Tomorrow will be a normal Friday. We will have a spelling post test and the end of the week test. Please study spelling words and vocabulary packets.
Math
This week we have begun Topic 5 which covers division. They were all in panic mode. Of course the first lesso is super easy and I try to tell them that up front. They always think I am lying, but guess what? They found it easy. So, first lesson down and successful. I also have given them basic fact tests. I have not done a great job doing this every week but we have done it the last two. I added Multiplication and will add division soon. They will moan and groan when I do that.
Social Studies
We will be finishing up the lesson on the Civil War and its effects on the Southeast tomorrow. Next Wednesday they will take a map test over the Southeast states AND capitals. We added capitals to their maps last week. Remember this is the best way to learn all 50 states. Region by region is the best. At the end of the year we will be naming all 50 states and capitals. Our next lesson will be on Atlanta, Georgia and finding gold in Georgia. We are getting close to another test.
Friday, Feb. 10th Spirit Day
Tomorrow is "Red" Day. Ms. Simmons emailed about this. Since she is from KC. She is a huge Chiefs fan. She has declared tomorrow a day of celebration for her. The students can pay $1.00 to wear sweats (me too)! YAY! If you are not a Chiefs fan and you don't want to humor Ms. Simmons then you can wear your own favorite football team. I am not a Chiefs fan but I will be wearing my ISU sweatshirt to wear red!
Parent- Teacher Conferences
Be on the lookout. Conference scheduling will be coming out soon. It will be done via JMC this time. There are lots of times after school for those who have jobs and need an evening time. You will need to be able to sign into JMC to get to it. Again it will come out soon. Maybe watch for it next week.
I hope everyone has a great weekend! I get to spend some of it with my daughter doing some wedding planning. I am looking forward to that.
God Bless,
Mrs. Sickels
