Dear Parents,
Happy Thursday!!! Well, first snowfall of 2023 is here! Yesterday was a nice afternoon to have off. I got some good reading in and some of a puzzle put together. I also watched a little Netflix. I was whining because it was raining and not snowing. I was beginning to think snow was never going to happen. I had recess duty today and it was fun watching the kids play in the snow. Lots of snow "things" being built. I had a area of ducks, a dinosaur and just some beginnings of snowmen. It was definitely a cold one. The wind was very icy.
Language Arts
This week we read a story called Ecology for Kids. It is informational text. It talks to them about what ecology is, what an ecologist is and different things we need to be aware of in the environment. Some found it interesting and some did not. I sometimes wish I could pick and choose the stories we read, BUT my stories would mainly be fiction. So it is probably a good idea it is not me or they would not learn how to read informational text or non fiction pieces. I do enjoy a good historical fiction book. This week we have talked about irregular verbs meaning present tense grow to past tense grew or take to took or drive to drove. We worked on the "be" verb (am is, are, was, were). We ended the week talking about irregular verbs with helping verbs ( had grown, had driven, has ridden). Tomorrow is a normal Friday. We will have post test and the end of the week test.
Next week we will have a Unit 3 test and we will be working on writing an opinion essay. So no spelling words.
Math
We have finished up Topic 4 and will be taking a test next week. It will either be Monday or Tuesday. It will depend on what we get done tomorrow. This book does not have me teach the students the standard algorithm of multiplication to them for double digit numbers. In conversation with Ms. Surma we disagree with that choice. So after the test I plan to teach them the standard way of multiplying. Ms. Surma will need to focus solely on division next year so that is why I go ahead and teach this. Usually I move into perimeter and area at this point also since area deals with multiplication. We are moving along so nicely this year. I am really happy with how it is progressing.
Social Studies
We have finished Chapter 6 and done a review for it. Tomorrow they will take a test over the chapter 6. I am super proud on how they did no their Map Test of the Southeast. Most everyone got a perfect paper. Now we just have to add capitals to that. I will do that next chapter. Which starts next week.
Spirit Day
Tomorrow is a Spirit Day! Pay $1.00 to wear sweats! Perfect day! I wish I could wear sweats. Remember our money goes towards good things. We made Ms. Surma a sunshine basket when she had surgery.
Catholic Schools Week
Our celebration of CSW will begin Sunday, January 29, and end Friday, February 3. i will put a more detailed list of events and dress up days next week though ll families had one go home in youngest child's take home folder.
Take Home Folder
Sorry today was different and I forgot to do my blog and to send home folders. They will bring them home tomorrow. Sorry for any inconvenience.
Coffee/Smoothie Day
The PTO is sponsoring a coffee/smoothie day next Wednesday. WE were to have it yesterday but due to weather we cancelled it. So next Wednesday we get a treat after Mass!
FAST Testing
I am almost done with FAST testing. WE will have to do some make up ones next week due to missing yesterday afternoon. Most all kids are showing improvement in all areas. Can't wait for you to see the results.
This day was a crazy one the only reason I was so off was due to Mrs. Warner gong home ill. I forgot what day it was since the kids did not have band. I know tomorrow is Friday and I get to wear jeans! I will be more with it. I must have read too much yesterday! I am looking forward to a relaxing weekend with nothing to do.
God Bless,
Mrs. Sickels
