Dear Parents,

Happy New Year! Here we are again ready for the last half of the year. We have returned from a long much needed break and dove right back into our routine. Not sure they were ready for it but that is what we did. We have lots to accomplish before the end of the year. We have 3 weeks of hard work before Catholic Schools week is upon us. That will be a busy week with lots of extra activities for us to participate in.

Language Arts

We started a new story this week. It is the 3rd story in our Module. This makes it the last one. Which means next week will be a module test. The story this week is called The Diary From Here to There. It is about a family from Mexico whose father loses his job and they have to relocate to American to find work. He becomes a Migrant worker. We talked a lot about immigration and Migrant Workers. I have also showed them a read a loud option that is about immigration and is very eye opening. For grammar this week we are focusing on compound and complex sentences. The spelling words are focusing on the three different vowel sounds in an r-controlled vowel dealing with /ar/ and /ir/. The spelling list is also over r-controlled vowel words. The spelling post test and end of the week test will be next Tuesday. Please also be watching for a new book report assignment that will be coming out next week.

Math

We have been working on a review this week over Topic 3 on multiplication. We check the review together and went over each problem and how to do it. Their test is vvery similar to the review. The work to do be done is the same they just change the numbers. So I have made each student put their math book in their bag to come home today, so they can study for their test which is tomorrow. It is a longer test so I am not sure one day will get it completed. We may need to take two.

Social Studies

We are finishing up a chapter. We will be starting a review next week and testing by the end of the week. This is our first test over the Southeast. On Wednesday they will also have their first test over the States of the Southeast. They will need to label a map with all the Southeast states. Reminder, it is best for them to learn each region as we study them because at the end of the year they have to do all 50 states and capitals.

Spirit Day

Tomorrow, Friday, January 10th is a spirit day. The students may pay $1.00 to wear sweat pants. It is perfect sweat pant weather! Bring in those dollars.

Mass

We have our Mass next Wednesday, the 15th. I have given students jobs and their parts to go along with them. Please, be sure they are practicing between now and then.

I hope all of you had a wonderful Christmas break. Mine was nice and relaxing but I have not had one Christmas yet. I went home on the 20th and ended up with the stomach flu that night. I had to stay home from the Christmas that was the next day. Then on Christmas my daughter Jami and her husband ended up with it. ( I had not been around them so not from me) So we postponed Christmas to the 5th. Due to weather (that didn't happen) we cancelled. Now it is this Saturday and I pray it happens. My tree is still up with all the presents around it. Which is fine because I never take my tree down until after Epiphany and the baptism of Jesus anyway. It just didn't feel like Christmas to me.
