Dear Parents,

Happy Thursday!! Only one more Thursday that I will be writing a blog after today!!! It is so hard to believe we are hear all ready! Some of the students are on summer break a little too soon. I have tried to explain that we are working right up to the end and so we need to focus. The weather finally turning into decent temperatures is not helping either. I am happy that they are getting outside and fresh air and able to run around! That has helped tremendously!!

Language Arts

We are reading our last story in our books this week. The story is called The Fun They Had. It is a science fiction story about the future. It is showing what school is like in the future by also having the future students learning about what school was like now. The story is set in 2157. I am not sure all the students were very impressed with the futuristic way of learning. They would not be around friends or have recess or PE or Music. It is a fun story, I wold recommend you read it with them. We have been reviewing in grammar this week. We have talked about capitalization in Titles of books, Movies and magazines, end punctuation and commas in compound sentences. The vocab strategy this week was on Latin and Greek words parts therm, fac, aud, and meter. be sure they study for their last weekly test! Vocabulary words and spelling words! We will not be taking the last Unit test. WE are moving on into reading Charlie and The Chocolate Factory together. I have begun reading it aloud but I will give them each copies of the book and have them begin reading chapters in partners, groups or on their own. We will also have some worksheets that reviews skills from the year using this book. YAY, It is meant to be fun and a little lighter than what we have been doing.

Book Report

The book report is due on Monday! Please bring in all projects that day! We will begin to share them! I hope to have them finished by the end of the week.

Math

This week we have worked on factors and Prime and Composite numbers. We will begin fractions next week after a lesson on multiples. We are working on getting the main concept learned. I am not working on the word problems with them, I am focusing on the skill. IF the skill involves word problems than we will focus on them. One thing most need to review over the summer would be division. We spend a lot of time on it but it definitely is a hard topic for them to grasp and hold on to.

Social Studies

We finished up the Map test for the Midwest today. Some students studied hard ad it paid off for them. Tomorrow they will be introduced to the Southwest. WE will only ready certain lessons on the southwest and then we will move right into the West. We have a lit to get finished by the end of the year. I will pick and choose what lessons we over. They will definitely be given a map test on Tuesday the 24th over all 50 states and capitals. They may need to start studying now.

Wednesday, May 25th

This is a crazy day! In the morning we will have Mass at normal time. After mass we will have awards for those in sports and the winners of the Dollars For Scholars essays will be announced. After that we will head outside for the "Silly String Party" for lap-a-thon. In the afternoon we will head to the high school to practice for the Spring Program which will take place that evening. We will clean out desks that day so be sure to send an extra bag with your student to bring everything home.

Last Day May 26th

Just to give you a heads up, the last day has been changed to a half day of school. We plan to have field day that morning beginning at 9:45. We are dismissed at noon. There will be no lunch at school that day. Field day will end about 11:30 or 11:45. The 8th grade clap-out will take place at noon. then all will be dismissed for the summer!

I will be absent tomorrow all day. If you have messages for your kids please call the office. I am heading to Ames to bring Molly home for the summer. I am very excited! It will be great to enjoy her for a couple months before she heads back. It is hard to believe when she heads back I will have one off and married!! Such an exciting summer ahead! Tomorrow is NOT a spirit day.

God Bless,

Mrs. Sickels
