Happy Thursday!! I hope this finds you all well. I know Strep is going around among other things. Please be aware of the guidelines for bringing your child back to school. We just want to do our best and not passing it around if we possibly can. I know we can't stop It. I feel like this has been quite a week of work. Math stepped up with homework. We have done a week full of testing in Language arts. Also Social Studies was a test week. Whew, that is pretty much over with for a while. I did give a few late slips this week. Some are still having a hard time keeping things in the homework folder. I cleaned out a lot of people's folders this week for them. Please allow me to do that at school. I know what needs to be kept in there and what we can get rid of and where to put it. Some really needed the clean out. Again, we will get this down soon. I am still very positive about this group. They will get it figured out.

Language Arts

This week we have been busy in Language arts. We have taken a Module test which is similar to a Unit test. I assigned their first book report which you should find in their folders, and we partnered up to create some fun Halloween stories. The tests are complete, I have checked most of them. You will find the results in next week's folder. This test seems to be a little harder than the weekly ones which is to be expected. Next Tuesday we will start with Module 2 week 1 and begin with a spelling pretest.

Book Reports: The instructions are in their homework folders. I have helped a few find books. They will be creating a cereal box project. So save your next empty cereal box for them. Once they have found a book they like they have to bring it to me so I can okay it and write it down. I like to keep track of what they are reading. They need to read the book in its entirety first. Then they will come to me and I will give them some pieces they need to complete the project. They need to be creative about their front and back of the box. I gave them some suggestions on games to put on the back. You can find mazes to print out or word searches that will generate your very own word search. They have about 7 weeks to complete this report.

Fast Scores - You will find your students testing scores in their take home folders today.

Math

This Topic is all review for students. It is about addition and subtraction. They worked on adding numbers up to the 100's. The next lesson gave them even bigger numbers into the hundred thousands. Then we moved into subtraction where I have to slow down a bit because I have to refresh their memory on how to regroup when the subtraction can not happen. That took them a little bit to remember. They are working on a wkst over subtraction today. Tomorrow the numbers will get bigger and we will subtract numbers with multiple zeroes in them which makes it very confusing. I have talked to them about slowing down so they don't get it back to correct

Social Studies

We took a test on Monday. Those tests are coming home to be signed today. Please sign them and return them. I feel like over all the students did very well. We started the next chapter today which is over the Northeast Region. They have listed the 11 states that make up that region in their notebooks. They will be expected to label a map of the Northeast with the states by the end of the chapter. I will give them maps next week during Map skills to make an answer key and some blank ones to use for practice testing. I will let them know when the first test will be. It is important that they learn each region because at the end of 4th grade they will need to be able to do all 50!

Conferences

The conference link has been sent out to all of you. You can find it on JMC. Please be sure to go on and fill out a time that works best for you. I will be here those hours no matter what so get signed up. I can't wait to meet with all of you and talk about what is going on with your student.

Noisy Change Collection

The 3rd grade will be having a noisy change collection at their Mass on October 16th. They are doing this for Kindness Week. They will be donating their money to two different organizations. You will find a flyer about it in your child's take home folders today. This will give you more details on their project.

Fire Prevention Posters

The students started to work on Fire Prevention Posters last week. They continued to work on them this week. From what I have seen the voting may be difficult this year. This class is really showing great effort in their poster. I am super impressed. Good Luck to all.

Monday, October 14 - No School

This a Professional development day. The students get an extra day to have fun while the teachers work hard at school improving their teaching. The best part will be wearing sweatpants.

I hope you are all looking forward to the weekend. I know I am. I get to have some Grandma time at the Simpson Homecoming game. I would have loved the game, but since my former Hayes student is injured and can't play, I think I will be paying closer attention to my granddaughter. Roll Storm!

God Bless,

Mrs. Sickels
