Dear Parents,
Happy Thursday! I feel like I just wrote a blog yesterday and here I am doing it again. We have started to see some late slips this week. I am not surprised. We have gotten into more of a routine where homework play a role. They are now needing to learn some time management skills. Maybe you could help them by asking if there is homework and creating a space for them that is conducive to working on it quietly with no distractions. This may help them to know they should work and get it done to move on to the fun things they want to do.
Language Arts
We have started the 2nd week in language arts. This week's story is called The Year of the Rat. The skills we will discuss with this story are Point of View and character. Our spelling list is covering long e and short e and the decoding lessons also match this skill. In grammar we will be talking about the 4 kinds of sentences. They are Declarative (telling), Interrogative (question), imperative (command) and Exclamatory (exclamation). Today we focused on the Declarative and Interrogative sentences. We will do the other two next week. We will be looking to take our post test and end of week test about Next Thursday of next week. They all have a copy of the spelling list in their folders.
Math
We have competed 3 lessons in topic 1 so far. Today we finished up lesson 3. This lesson was over comparing numbers. This is where they use the symbols <, >, =. We also name the place value in which we make our decision on which is greater or less. This lesson is always a review for them. I feel like they are good at deciding which symbol to use and which number is larger or smaller. I also gave back corrections on the first couple of worksheets they did and allowed time to work on those and ask questions.
Social Studies
We have begun chapter 2 and almost finished with the first lesson. So far they have completed one vocabulary word. We will finish the lesson today and they will have a worksheet to do over the lesson. Remember we are doing all of this chapter and will take a test over it. By the time we are done there will be about 15 vocabulary words for them to practice. We are defining the vocabulary words on note cards so they can be used like flash cards for studying when it is test time.
Green Valley Field Trip Monday, September 15th
On Monday we have our field trip to Green Valley. We leave the school about 9:30 in the morning. We will be participating in 4-5 activities at the park. The 4th graders get to fish that day. No other class will get to do that. We have to be respectful of the park staff and all they are trying to do for us. Students will be taking a Nature Hike and learn about the wildlife in the park, there will be Gaga ball, parachute play, campground play equipment, Beach fun and games area will have frisbees, bean bag toss, and sand castle building, and then fishing is the other activity.
Don't forget your child will need a sack lunch on this day and be sure to have a full water bottle. Also all students should wear comfortable walking shoes (tennis shoes) and clothing that could potentially get wet or dirty. Please watch the weather and dress accordingly. Mornings tend to be chilly and afternoons are warmer. Looks to be in the 80"s that day.
I hope everyone has a great weekend. Sounds like it could be a hot one. I have a wedding to attend and my youngest is coming home for the wedding also. I will get to enjoy her and her fiance Friday through church on Sunday. I look forward to it. Enjoy every minute of your children being at home because before you know it they have all graduated college and are adults with adult jobs Don't blink!
God Bless,
Mrs. Sickels
