Dear Parents,
Happy Thursday!! I feel like I just wrote a blog and here I am doing it again. This week has gone quickly. Students have started to see some late slips come out this week. We are not being responsible enough to finish work once we take it home. My hope is that we get that figured out soon. Maybe it will take some to serve their first detention before they figure it out. I also have had some behaviors happen that I have warned students about that can land them in detention also. One is throwing things across the room. Whether that is throwing something in the trash from across the room or throwing something at a friend across the room, both will get you a detention. I felt like I needed to make that clear to you also. Another thing is if you are caught putting crayon, colored pencil lead, or anything else that makes a mark on the floor, under your chair leg on purpose so every time you move in or out of your desk it makes marks on the floor, you will be in after school for detention cleaning up the mess you made. Both of these things happened today and the whole class was warned that behavior would lead to detention.
Language Arts
We have started the 2nd week in language arts. This is made up of two stories. One is called Yes! We Are Latinos and the 2nd one is called The Year of the Rat. Together they are about 20 pages long. We will take approximately 10 days to complete this week of stories. I will keep you and the students aware of when the post test will be for spelling. This week we are focusing on short e and long e sounds. Our spelling list reflects this and the decoding lessons also match this skill. In grammar we will be talking about the 4 kinds of sentences. They are Declarative (telling), Interrogative (question), imperative (command) and Exclamatory (exclamation). Today we focused on the Declarative and Interrogative sentences.
Math
We have competed 3 lessons in topic 1 so far. Today was used as a correction day because I had many that needed to make corrections of some worksheets. I partnered them with people who did not need to correct to help them find the correct answers. We also spent some time reviewing how to round numbers. That is our next lesson. We will be rounding very large numbers. I have worked with them on numbers up to the millions so they will have to round that high also. We will begin that tomorrow and carry it over to Monday.
Social Studies
We have begun chapter 2 and almost finished with the first lesson. So far they have completed one vocabulary word. We will finish the lesson tomorrow and they will have a worksheet to do over the lesson. Remember we are doing all of this chapter and will take a test over it. By the time we are done there will be about 15 vocabulary words for them to practice. I have LEAP students that leave twice a week during Social Studies so they need to be sure they are making up for the work they are missing.
Green Valley Field Trip Monday, September 16th
On Monday we have our field trip to Green Valley. We leave the school about 9:30 in the morning. We will be participating in 4-5 activities at the park. The 4th graders get to fish that day. No other class will get to so that. I will say that if we have kids that are misbehaving they will sit out of the activities and not get to participate. We have to be respectful of the park staff and all they are trying to do for us. Students will be taking a Nature Hike and learn about the wildlife in the park, there will be an Art in the Park activity where they will get to decorate a part of the sidewalk, Beach fun and games area will have frisbees, bean bag toss, and sand castle building, and them fishing is the other activity.
Don't forget your child will need a sack lunch on this day. Also all students should wear comfortable walking shoes and clothing that could potentially get wet or dirty. Please watch the weather and dress accordingly. Mornings tend to be chilly and afternoons are warmer.
I think my week has seemed to go fast because I am without a car. My car is in Des Moines being worked on and I am driving my in-laws truck. Which is not my favorite thing to do. So I will be happy to get MY car back. I hate vehicle trouble. I hope all of you have a great weekend. I don't have any plans except to get my car which means I will get to visit my granddaughter also. t
That will be my plus for the weekend.
God Bless,
Mrs. Sickels
